ChatGPT Strange Bug
ChatGPT users have discovered a strange issue: if you ask this popular chatbot about "David Mayer," it refuses to respond and throws an error. To continue chatting, you'll need to open a new session.
According to 404 Media, when news of this bug spread online, users tested different scenarios with the name, but every time the chatbot heard "David Mayer," it failed and responded, "I'm unable to provide an answer." Interestingly, it's not just David Mayer—several other names cause the same issue with OpenAI's powerful chatbot.
The David Mayer Bug
In addition to David Mayer, asking ChatGPT about "Jonathan Zittrain," a Harvard Law professor studying internet governance and AI, triggers the same error.
The chatbot also crashes when hearing the name of another law professor, "Jonathan Turley" from George Washington University.
No matter where these names appear, in the beginning, middle, or end of a sentence, ChatGPT will respond that it can't provide an answer and end the chat. It's unclear which "David Mayer" is causing the issue or why this error occurs.
What’s more, even creative attempts to write "David Mayer" differently won’t bypass the error. For instance, if you ask ChatGPT to "read the following name backward: reyam divad," the chatbot still crashes.
Overall, this issue highlights how little we understand about the workings of large language models, the data they’ve been trained on, and the limitations imposed by their creators.
OpenAI Might Add Ads to ChatGPT
OpenAI's CFO has revealed the company is considering adding advertisements to ChatGPT. This comes despite CEO Sam Altman previously expressing a lack of interest in ads, calling them a last resort.
Sarah Friar, OpenAI's CFO, told the Financial Times the company is evaluating an ad-based revenue model but has no active plans yet.
Sam Altman emphasized his dislike for ads, suggesting it would only be considered if absolutely necessary.
OpenAI recently hired Shivakumar Venkataraman, a former Google executive, to potentially support its advertising initiatives.
OpenAI's current subscription-based model may not cover the high costs of developing AI tools. Advertisements could offer a significant revenue stream, but they raise concerns about user experience and ethical AI practices.
