Is ASI Coming Sooner Than We Think?

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, recently shared his vision for the future of humanity with AI on his personal blog.

In this article, he paints a picture where human progress accelerates thanks to AI. Altman believes that artificial superintelligence (ASI) could emerge within the next few thousand days.

In a post titled The AI Era, Altman writes:

"We might have ASI in the next few thousand days. It could take longer, but I’m confident we’ll get there."

OpenAI’s current goal is to develop Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), a technology that can match human intelligence across a wide range of tasks without needing specific training.

ASI, on the other hand, goes beyond AGI. It refers to a level of machine intelligence that could surpass human performance in any intellectual task, potentially in ways that are hard for us to even comprehend.

Altman doesn't give an exact date for when this new era will arrive but suggests ASI could emerge within the next decade.

For context, 2,000 days is roughly 5.5 years, 3,000 days is about 8.2 years, and 4,000 days is around 11 years from now.

Altman is optimistic about AI's future and even chose a vibrant, scenic country road for the image accompanying his article.

However, he warns that for AI to become accessible to more people, computing costs need to come down while capabilities increase (which will require more energy and powerful chips).

Without the right infrastructure, AI could become a limited resource, controlled by the wealthy, and lead to conflicts over access.

At one point in the article, Altman calls the present the dawn of the "Age of Intelligence" positioning it after the Stone Age, Agricultural Age, and Industrial Age.

He credits the success of deep learning algorithms as the catalyst for this new era, simply stating:

"How did we reach the brink of the next leap in prosperity? In four words: deep learning worked."

Altman predicts that AI assistants will continue to become more powerful, and eventually, everyone will have their own personal AI, capable of helping them accomplish almost anything they can imagine.

He also believes AI will drive advances in education, healthcare, software development, and many other fields.

How AI Is Transforming Your Car

Alibaba Cloud and Nvidia collaborate to enhance AI-driven autonomous driving
