French startup Mistral has announced new AI models, including Pixtral Large and updates to its chatbot Le Chat. These advancements position it as a stronger competitor to ChatGPT.

Grandma AI

The UK's largest mobile network operator, O2, has recently introduced an AI chatbot designed to counter phone scammers.

According to TechCrunch, the chatbot, named dAIsy, is modeled as an elderly woman with plenty of time to chat about random topics, from knitting to her cat. The AI's main goal is to thwart scammers who try to steal people's banking information by engaging them in long, pointless conversations.

O2 explains that dAIsy was built by combining various AI models. First, it converts the caller's voice into text, then uses a custom large language model to generate a response. Finally, a text-to-speech model reads the response aloud in a natural voice.

How "Grandma AI" Works

A video showcasing dAIsy shows her in action, calling herself "a scammer's worst nightmare."

To test the chatbot, O2 added its phone numbers to lists often used by scammers to target victims.

When scammers call dAIsy, the AI engages them in unrelated conversations, talking about fake family members, imaginary hobbies, or even providing false banking details.

In one example, the chatbot asks a scammer to spell "WWW," while in another, a scammer yells, "We've been talking for an hour!" to which the AI calmly replies, "Time flies, doesn't it?"

The chatbot's training also relied heavily on input from YouTuber Jim Browning, known for his expertise in fighting scams.

Phone scams are a significant issue in the US and UK, with millions of elderly victims each year.

As mentioned in the video, 7 out of 10 people in the UK have faced phone scams.
