Google’s AI Chip Designer: AlphaChip!

Google DeepMind unveils AlphaChip, an AI system that designs computer chips using reinforcement learning

  • AlphaChip has designed Google’s last three generations of Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), improving performance and speeding up chip design.

  • The AI uses an “edge-based” graph neural network to learn relationships between components and generalize across various chip designs.

  • Google is releasing AlphaChip's model weights to encourage research and development in AI-driven chip design, with companies like MediaTek already adopting it.

AlphaChip creates a self-reinforcing cycle where AI designs better chips, which lead to even more advanced AI, potentially revolutionizing AI and chip development at a pace beyond human capabilities.

AI Cracks Google's CAPTCHA 100%

Researchers at ETH Zurich used AI to bypass Google’s reCAPTCHAv2 security system, successfully solving 100% of the CAPTCHAs like humans.

This advancement in AI has prompted Google to continuously update and strengthen its bot-detection systems.

CAPTCHAs are tests designed to differentiate humans from computers by asking users to select images or objects.

In a new study, Swiss researchers managed to break Google’s CAPTCHAs with the help of AI, although human assistance was also involved in solving these CAPTCHAs.

Their findings, published on September 13, show that current AI technologies can exploit image-based CAPTCHAs.

"Matthew Green" an associate professor of computer science at Johns Hopkins, stated that the results challenge the original idea behind CAPTCHAs, which assumed humans would outperform AI in solving them.

Experts like "Philip Mak" from New York University suggest that this outcome isn’t surprising, as AI development naturally leads to such consequences.

As computers improve at solving images and security patterns, Google continues to enhance its bot-detection algorithms.

"Sandy Kari" an analyst at Forrester, noted that companies must evolve their security models to counter advancing AI, which would raise the costs of developing bots to bypass these systems.

One solution is to make CAPTCHAs harder, though this could also make it difficult for humans, potentially leading to the eventual abandonment of this security method.

The future of CAPTCHA as a security technology remains uncertain. Some, like "Gene Tsudik" a professor of computer science at the University of California, believe that such security methods should be phased out, likening the race for new solutions to an "arms race".

However, Matthew Green and others argue that without CAPTCHAs, significant technical issues may arise for internet users.

He points out that not being able to verify if users are real or fake could heavily impact the digital economy, especially for commercial agencies and service operators.

Google upgrades NotebookLM with YouTube and audio support

  • NotebookLM now supports public YouTube URLs and audio files, enabling users to analyze videos and audio along with text sources.

  • It uses Gemini 1.5’s AI to summarize key concepts and transcribe audio.

  • A new sharing feature allows users to generate public links for AI-generated Audio Overviews.

This upgrade makes it easier for users to extract and analyze information from YouTube videos and audio, saving time and boosting productivity across various tasks like studying or creating content.
