U.S. strikes CHIPS deal with TSMC
Joe Biden announced a deal with Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC. They will build three advanced semiconductor factories in Arizona for $11 billion.
TSMC will invest a total of $65 billion and create over 25,000 jobs.
$50 million will go to training the local workforce. The US aims to make 20% of the world's top semiconductors by 2030.
This is the fifth deal under the CHIPS Act, following agreements with Intel and GlobalFoundries.
This move is significant because it secures the US's spot in the supply chain amidst concerns about Taiwan's stability and growing demand for AI chips.
