Apple Open-source language models

Apple launched OpenELM, a set of small, open-source language models made for iPhones and Macs to run smoothly.

  • OpenELM has eight models in four sizes (270M, 450M, 1.1B, and 3B), all trained on public data.

  • OpenELM slightly outperforms similar open-source models like OLMo, even though it needs only half the training data.

Apple's decision to open-source this is a big shift from their usual secretive approach.
