Anthropic has started a new program focused on "model welfare", diving into whether future AI systems could become conscious and if they might deserve moral consideration.

OpenAI Drops New Open Model
OpenAI is working on its first open-source language model since GPT‑2, aiming to release it by this summer. The model is still in early development and is expected to compete with other major open-source models like Meta’s LLaMA and Google’s Gemma.
Led by Aidan Clark, VP of Research at OpenAI, the model is being built with a focus on open collaboration.
The model will likely be released under a very permissive license, allowing broad use and commercial applications.
It will be optimized for high-end consumer hardware and may allow developers to toggle reasoning capabilities on/off.
This move signals OpenAI’s response to community pressure over the limited usability of other open-source models. By releasing a more open and powerful model, OpenAI could reshape the open-source AI landscape, challenging Meta, Google, and others in the race for dominance.
