OpenAI Hidden Data Center Plan

OpenAI and Microsoft updated their partnership contract, giving Microsoft priority in hosting OpenAI’s cloud needs while removing the exclusivity restriction that required OpenAI to only use Microsoft Azure for computational infrastructure.

  • Microsoft now has a "right of first refusal" (ROFR) for OpenAI’s cloud hosting. If Microsoft can’t meet the demand, OpenAI can work with other providers.

  • OpenAI’s APIs will still remain exclusive to Microsoft Azure, and revenue-sharing terms, including Microsoft receiving 20% of OpenAI’s revenue, stay unchanged until 2030.

  • A new project, Stargate, supported by SoftBank and Oracle, aims to invest $500 billion in AI data centers across the U.S. for OpenAI.

This change signals a shift in OpenAI's operational flexibility, helping the company address its computational capacity issues.
