Researchers at Johns Hopkins University have made a major leap in surgical robotics, training a robot to perform complex medical procedures by simply watching videos of human surgeons in action.
The da Vinci Surgical System robot mastered critical tasks like needle manipulation, tissue lifting, and suturing with human-level precision.
It used an imitation learning approach, training on hundreds of surgical videos captured by da Vinci’s wrist cameras.
The AI blends ChatGPT-like architecture with kinematics, teaching the robot to "speak surgery" through precise mathematical movements.
Surprisingly, the robot showed unexpected adaptability, like retrieving dropped needles on its own—something it wasn’t explicitly trained to do.
This breakthrough in robotic learning and dexterity could transform surgical robotics, much like LLMs revolutionized AI. By learning from videos, robots might soon adapt to any procedure without needing labor-intensive hand-coding for every movement.

Apple Prepares to Launch AI-Powered Smart Home Display
Apple is reportedly gearing up to unveil a wall-mounted AI smart home display, designed as a central hub for everything from video calls to appliance management, according to Apple insider Mark Gurman.
The tablet-like device will feature a 6-inch screen equipped with a camera, speakers, and proximity sensing technology to adjust displays based on the user’s distance.
Powered by Siri and Apple Intelligence, the display will enable users to:
Control apps and appliances
Use FaceTime as a home intercom
Play music and more.
A premium version with a robotic arm is reportedly in development, marketed as a “home companion with an AI personality.”
Launch is anticipated as early as March, with pricing expected to compete with existing smart displays like Google’s Nest Hub and Amazon’s Echo Hub.
After falling behind Amazon and Google in the smart home market, Apple is making its boldest move yet. This isn’t just another smart display — it’s Apple’s first dedicated AI hardware product, potentially redefining how we interact with home AI systems in the future.
