2 Years of School in 6 Weeks!

A study in Nigeria showed that students using AI tutoring learned as much as they would in two years of regular school in just six weeks. This shows how helpful AI can be for learning in developing countries.

  • A World Bank-supported program used AI tutoring with teacher help to improve English skills.

  • Students did much better than their classmates in English, AI knowledge, and digital skills, and even improved in their school tests.

  • Girls, especially those who were behind, made big improvements, and students who attended more sessions learned even more.

This is one of the first studies to show how AI can make a big difference in learning in a developing country. It proves AI works best as a help for teachers, not a replacement, and it could help fix education problems in places with too few teachers.

French Woman Got Scammed $850,000

A French woman was scammed $850,000 by someone using AI to create fake images of Brad Pitt.

According to the New York Post, the victim, a 58-year-old French interior designer, shared her story on French TV. She explained that it all began when a woman claiming to be Brad Pitt’s mother contacted her. The woman said her "son" needed someone like her in his life.

The French woman initially thought the messages were fake but didn’t fully grasp what was happening. Over the next 18 months, she maintained contact with the fake Brad Pitt. During this time, she received romantic messages and even marriage proposals from the scammer.

The victim said, “There aren’t many men who write to you like that. I fell in love with the man I was talking to. He knew how to speak to women, and everything was perfectly orchestrated.”

At the time, she was in the middle of divorcing her millionaire husband, who is about 20 years older than her. The scammer first claimed he was sending her expensive handbags and that she only needed to pay $9,200 in customs fees.

The scam escalated when the fake Brad Pitt said he had kidney cancer and needed money for treatment. He claimed his real ex-wife, Angelina Jolie, had frozen his bank accounts. To make the story more believable, the scammer sent AI-generated hospital photos. Eventually, the woman agreed to transfer $850,000 to a Turkish bank account.

The truth came out last summer when the real Brad Pitt was seen with his new girlfriend. That’s when the woman realized she had been conned. It remains unclear whether the scammer has been caught.

Broken Trust: Apple AI

Apple has temporarily paused its AI-powered news summary feature after it generated false headlines, including fabricated stories about arrests and deaths.

  • The feature, launched with the iPhone 16 in September, aimed to summarize multiple news notifications.

  • Prominent outlets like the BBC and the Washington Post criticized it for misrepresenting facts and undermining trust.

  • Apple plans to improve labeling of AI summaries and give users more control over the feature.

Missteps like this damage trust in both journalism and AI products, highlighting Apple’s struggles to compete with more advanced AI systems and live up to its launch promises.
